Chuck Schumer, Dancin' With Them What Brung Him

I've always been lukewarm at best to Senator Charles Schumer - he's struck me as too far in bed with the DLC wing of the party, and this article confirms it for me.
June was a busy month for Senator Charles E. Schumer. On the phone, at large parties and small gatherings around the nation, he raised more than $1 million from the booming private equity and hedge fund industries for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, of which he is chairman.

But there is another way Mr. Schumer has been busy with hedge fund and private equity managers, an important part of his constituency in New York. He has been reassuring them that he will resist an effort led by members of his own party to single out the industry with a plan that would more than double the taxes on the enormous profits reaped by its executives.

Let's get this straight - hedge fund and private equity managers pay 15% on the dollar for the obscene profits they make, and that's not taking into account any offshore accounts, tax shelters and dodges and outright cheating those fatcat motherfuckers do. You and I, on the other hand, pay something in the 25-45% range.

You tell me - us that fair? Is that progressive? Is that just and equitable?

Fuck no it's not.
But in the case of the tax proposals, the strategy behind Mr. Schumer’s efforts is putting to the test another set of principles he is known for. He has regularly portrayed himself as a progressive politician who identifies with the struggles of the middle class and is sharply critical of the selfish “plutocrats” who he says control the Republican Party.

And he has written a book on the subject, advising policy makers to follow his strategy of deciding positions by identifying with the concerns of people like the Baileys, a fictional middle-class family from Long Island that he uses as a guide.
Wonder what the Baileys would think of this, hm? I know what I think - I think it's a sign that Mr. Schumer needs a good opponent in the next election, an opponent that won't stab the middle class in the back just to keep getting those fat contributions from the Wall Street fatcats.

What does the senator have to say about it?
Mr. Schumer said in an interview that he was torn between the need to protect an industry vital to his home state and the need to generate revenues to finance government programs. He said a tax increase on private equity and hedge fund executives could lead to an exodus of jobs and companies from New York, and even from the country. He said the plan, if enacted federally, would also lead to an increase in New York State tax that would further bear down on the industry. He said he worried that the industry was being unfairly singled out.
Ooooh, the poor widdle babies, getting singled out like that. Why, you'd think they'd been screwing the middle class and skimming themselves hundreds of millions of dollars in income and then not paying their fair share of taxes on it, or something?

I can't see a simple tax hike destroying the hedge fund industry - which I don't think contributes near as much to the New York economy as it does to the campaigns of politicians like Schumer. Isn't that what Schumer's really afraid of? That he won't be on that nice juicy gravy train anymore? That's what it looks like to me.

We need to let Schumer know that the fatcats don't own the Democratic Party, we do. He's responsible to us, not Wall Street.

Don't Worry, It Can't Happen Here

Honest. The warrantless wiretapping? We should trust that it's only being used against bad people that want to hurt America. We shouldn't worry that our president and his staff think exposing undercover CIA agents in the name of petty political revenge is A-OK. We shouldn't worry that the president thinks he's above the law - all law.

No, don't worry about any of that.

And certainly don't worry about this:
Executive Order: Blocking Property of Certain Persons Who Threaten Stabilization Efforts in Iraq

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, including the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, as amended (50 U.S.C. 1701 et seq.)(IEEPA), the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1601 et seq.)(NEA), and section 301 of title 3, United States Code,

I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, find that, due to the unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States posed by acts of violence threatening the peace and stability of Iraq and undermining efforts to promote economic reconstruction and political reform in Iraq and to provide humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people, ...I hereby order:

...all property and interests in property of the following persons, that are in the United States, that hereafter come within the United States, or that are or hereafter come within the possession or control of United States persons, are blocked and may not be transferred, paid, exported, withdrawn, or otherwise dealt in: any person determined by the Secretary of the Treasury, in consultation with the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Defense,

(i) to have committed, or to pose a significant risk of committing, an act or acts of violence that have the purpose or effect of:

(A) threatening the peace or stability of Iraq or the Government of Iraq; or

(B) undermining efforts to promote economic reconstruction and political reform in Iraq or to provide humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people;

(ii) to have materially assisted, sponsored, or provided financial, material, logistical, or technical support for, or goods or services in support of, such an act or acts of violence or any person whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order; or

(iii) to be owned or controlled by, or to have acted or purported to act for or on behalf of, directly or indirectly, any person whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order.

(b) The prohibitions in subsection (a) of this section include, but are not limited to, (i) the making of any contribution or provision of funds, goods, or services by, to, or for the benefit of any person whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order, and (ii) the receipt of any contribution or provision of funds, goods, or services from any such person.

...

For those persons whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order who might have a constitutional presence in the United States, I find that, because of the ability to transfer funds or other assets instantaneously, prior notice to such persons of measures to be taken pursuant to this order would render these measures ineffectual. I therefore determine that for these measures to be effective in addressing the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13303 and expanded in Executive Order 13315, there need be no prior notice of a listing or determination made pursuant to section 1(a) of this order.

Simply put, Bush is saying that he has the right to confiscate the assets, without any warning at all, of anyone "undermining" the reconstruction efforts in Iraq.

Call me alarmist, but this is just another step down the road to totalitarianism. Bush and his cabal have clearly demonstrated that they operate unfettered by conscience or obedience to the law. They are willing to say and do anything - anything - to stay in power. When does Bush decide that calling for a withdrawal in Iraq constitutes "undermining"? When does Cheney decide that writing a critical editorial is "undermining" the war effort? When does Abu Gonzales decide that it's necessary to disappear "underminers" and subject them to "vigorous" questioning to make sure all their assets are accounted for?

More importantly, when does Congress finally act in accordance with the will of the people and impeach those sorry sons of bitches?

BOHICA

Hat tip to Cernig for this one:

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice... won't get fooled again? Yeah, right.

The Senate voted 97-0 for this twaddle.

Go read the text, and then you can start puking. It's the exact same shit as before the Iraq war, and they fell for it.

Way to go, you fucking piss-sucking, wetbrained, marmot-buggering bunch of congenital asswipes. Made my fucking day, you did.

More Republican! Ethics! In! Action!!!!

State Rep. Bob Allen (R - Closet) busted for offering a blowjob to an undercover cop.
Titusville police were at Veteran's Memorial Park on East Broad Street on a burglary detail when they noticed an unshaven man acting suspicious, going in and out of the restroom three times, said Lt. Todd Hutchinson.

An undercover officer decided to go into one of the bathroom stalls, Hutchinson said. Moments later, Allen knocked on the stall door and offered to perform oral sex on the officer for $20, according to the police spokesman.
Among other things, Allen pushed for a Lewd and Lascivious Behavior Act as well as a Sexual Predator act in the Florida house of representatives - I guess it takes one to know one.

The real humor is on Allen's House web page - under his biographical information, there's this:

Where Does The Time Go?

No, seriously - I mean, there's 158 hours in a week, and I'm only asleep for maybe 35 of them. That's 123 left, and I still can't seem to find time to actually compose any posts.

Taking out the 45 hours I'm in the office every week, that leaves 78. Figuring in drive times, take off another 5 - 73. Then there's cooking supper and cleaning during the week - 10 hours, so 63.

63 hours per week, minus an hour per day for getting the kids to bed and another 4 hours for weekend chores. 63 - 9 = 54. Eating meals and bathing - 7 hours. 54 - 7 = 47.

I dunno - I must be missing something, but I can't figure out what.

I suppose I let the rest get nickeled and dimed down to nothing.

I ought to do something about that. I'm feeling guilty that I haven't posted much here lately.

Another One Gone, Damn It All

Fred Saberhagen is dead.

Fred Saberhagen created the Berserkers, robotic killing machines that are the leftover of an ancient galactic war. For someone reading SF during the Cold War, there was a strong message about being mindful of the weapons you use - that your sword can turn in your hand and strike at your own heart if you're not careful.

When my imagination wasn't jumping across Mars with John Carter or brachiating with Tarzan, it was frequently out in space, outwitting the Berserker menace. Mr. Saberhagen's creations were part of my youth, and it's another part gone.

Go in peace, Mr. Saberhagen.

Impeach

Take a minute or two today and call your Congressgritters. Let them know you're sick and tired of the bullshit and they ought to impeach the motherfucker already.

Try to use simple words, and don't curse, because big words confuse them and bad words tend to make them reach for the smelling salts.
